Heated towel rails for your bathroom

June 30, 2010
Posted in Bathroom Advice — Written by Becky

One of the most uncomfortable experiences you can have in the bathroom on a daily basis is when you have to try and dry yourself with a wet towel. On cold mornings, this can completely ruin the invigorating effect of a nice hot shower. This is also really inhospitable for when you have guests over to stay.

One of the ways people get around this is to use a fresh towel every time they get in the shower, but this can be a little irritating simply because it means you get through your towels far too quickly.

The problem lies in the way your store your towels. If you simply hang them up on a rail then they are unlikely to dry out in time for your next shower. Instead, you should think about investing in heated towel rails.

Heated towel rails actually give you the option of storing more than one towel at a time, making excellent use of wall space in your room. When they are washed, you can simply line your towels up on the heated rail ensuring there is always a warm, dry one available. They also remove the need for cupboard space solely for extra towels.

If you enjoy having a shower then it is worth devoting a little space to your shower arrangements. A lot of people choose to save space by placing their shower unit over their baths, but for those you like to shower separately there are two further options available.

Shower enclosures

Shower enclosures are a lovely way of enjoying your shower. This is because they provide a nice, removed atmosphere in which to shower. They are relaxing and practical and they save an awful lot of space in small bathrooms if you choose to have one instead of a bath. The one drawback of these units is that they occasionally lack space.

Wet rooms

Wet rooms are a way of getting that extra space that a shower enclosure can’t quite afford. This extra space adds to the pleasure of having a shower, increasing the relaxing atmosphere and enhancing the effect of the hot water and peace and quiet.

Naturally, you must also decide upon a kind of shower to into your enclosure or your wet room. Choose from regular showers, electric showers and power showers. Hydrotherapy showers are also available, but they come with dedicated enclosures.

It isn’t perhaps something you automatically consider in the summertime, but underfloor heating can make a massive difference to the general level of comfort you and you family are afforded by your bathroom.

A bathroom for all seasons

Even though the weather is lovely now, you must remember when you are renovating your bathroom, that winter mornings and evenings can be really uncomfortable especially in rooms with tiled flooring. Don’t let the current climate disguise issues that arise in other seasons.

Bathroom floor tiles

Most bathroom flooring used in the UK used tiles. This is because bathroom tiles are really easy to clean, they are exceptionally long lasting and they will withstand exposure to water on a daily basis. The only drawback of using tiles to floor your bathroom is that they are so cold!

Direct heating for your tiles

You can combat the chill you feel underfoot on cold mornings by investing in some underfloor heating. This type of heating will warm your tiles directly in a way that your radiators can’t quite manage. The result is that you bathroom is always comfortable no matter the weather, leaving you to enjoy the time you spend in there.

Kitchen lighting, heating and flooring are very important to great kitchen design, but you also need to spend lots of time on planning for your appliances and worktops, as well as you kitchen cabinets. This is where aesthetic considerations often take centre stage.

Appliances

You will obviously need things like a cookers, fridges, freezers and dishwashers. However, you can also get your hands on less obvious appliances like cooker hoods, waste disposal units and wine coolers. These contribute to giving your kitchen a pleasant atmosphere. You can also disguise some of your appliances with kitchen doors.

Kitchen cabinets and worktops

These components are often regarded the most important. Kitchen cabinets provide all your essential kitchen storage and kitchen worktops provide the essential surfaces you require for preparing food and drink in the kitchen. Together they also account for a vast proportion of the visible surface area of your kitchen, meaning they have to look great together.

Spend time considering contemporary and traditional styles of worktops in your search for the ultimate kitchen. Don’t forget that your kitchen sink will also have to slot into your worktops, so the material it is made from (stainless steel, granite, ceramic etc.) must match the theme you decide upon.

We have looked at kitchen flooring as one of the many components that make up an arresting kitchen. In Part 2 of this examination, we will consider kitchen lighting and heating options – things that are often glossed over and never looked at in detail.

Kitchen lighting

Practical lighting tends to be bright and mood lighting tends to be low. You need a mixture of both in your kitchen. This is simply because a kitchen is both a functional room and a sociable space.

Lots of people prefer to chat away in the kitchen than other rooms in the house, but only if the atmosphere is right, so have adequate low lighting in the form of spotlights and uplighters. More directed lighting focused onto your kitchen worktops, perhaps from underneath your upper kitchen doors, can provide the brighter, more practical solutions.

Kitchen heating

Heating is vital to keep your kitchen comfortable. Lots of people neglect the stylistic and practical benefits of putting a touch more thought into kitchen heating. Designer radiators are a great touch, making a more fashionable feature out of your radiators. Underfloor heating is also a great option as it directly heats the floor – a lovely feature on cold mornings.

A complete renovation of you kitchen demands a great deal of thought. Never approach a project of this kind half-heartedly as you may end up being left with a kitchen that isn’t exactly to your taste and doesn’t really meet the practical requirements of your household. When planning, you should never shy away from making decision, rather throw yourself into the project and grabbing opportunity to create a truly stunning room.

Loads of considerations need to be made if your kitchen project is to be a success. Each part of this article is intended to take you through some of the finer points of kitchen design to help you plan out your kitchen effectively.

Kitchen flooring

We’ll start off by looking at different types of kitchen flooring. You can take significant steps towards really impressive contemporary design with your kitchen flooring, so don’t consider it a low priority. Lots of kitchen designers choose to make their flooring a real feature, leaving things like kitchen worktops and cabinets a little understated in comparison.

Tiling is a great option, but make sure it is practical and not slippery. Tiling gives you the option of varying your floor design. Wooden flooring also looks great. One of the major appeals of these kinds of flooring is the ease with which they can be cleaned.

The right approach to bathroom lighting

Lighting in sometimes overlooked when people embark upon large scale bathroom renovations. People tend to focus on shopping for their bathroom suites, flooring options, bathroom furniture, and so on, without necessarily devoting enough time and thought to bathroom lighting.

Practicality and atmosphere

The most important thing about bathroom lighting is striking a balance between its practical functions and its more atmospheric and aesthetic ones. Once you have managed to solve this problem, you will be in a position to have it installed.

Atmosphere tends to come from dim lighting. Having the option to have low lighting in your bathroom often makes the room more comfortable by night. People rarely want to soak in the bath under bright spotlights, so make sure low lighting is available for moments of relaxation. Low lighting is also more flattering.

Direction

Of course, you cannot do without brighter lighting of some kind. Lots of bathroom activities are of a very practical nature and can’t be completed without adequate lighting. One of the best ways to set your lighting out is actually to have it directed. You will often be in front of the bathroom mirror when using the bathroom practically, so direct your lighting accordingly.

A couple of considerations regarding kitchen worktops

June 25, 2010

Kitchen worktops are among the most important things you have to consider when you are carrying out a full redecoration project of your whole kitchen. If you devote enough of your planning time to thinking about kitchen worktops then you will have a better chance of ending up with your ideal kitchen.

Colour

First of all, it is a good idea to have a plan regarding the general design of the kitchen. Choosing the colour of your worktop is a decision you have to make in relation to other kitchen components, including your kitchen cabinets. Get a little inspiration from magazines, websites and showrooms to see what type sort of kitchen design would look great in your home.

Practical concerns

Naturally, designing a kitchen is not all about style. There are practical considerations you have to make at the same time so that your kitchen worktops will withstand persistent use. For starters, you must decide on what material your worktops will be made from. This has style implications in the sense that not all materials will suit your design, but the major concern here is how hardwearing and long-lasting your worktops you will be. Choose from granite, quartz, wood and composites.

Improving storage options in the bathroom

June 24, 2010
Posted in Bathroom Advice — Written by Justin

Family bathrooms can get completely overrun by the sheer amount of things that need to be stored inside them. Members of the household are often competing for space in bathroom cabinets and so on.

Improving storage

One of the ways you can improve your bathroom storage is to make use of wall space. By having your bath towels hanging on heated towel rails, you will free up cupboard space. Moreover, you need to make use of the space above and below your bathroom sink. This space is wasted if you don’t install washstand cupboards beneath the sink and wall-mounted kitchen cabinets above it. You can get mirrored cabinets to hang over the sink.

Solutions in other rooms

It’s a good idea to enhance your bathroom storage by introducing washstands to other rooms. If you have teenage children, their rooms could benefit from a sink and some bathroom storage of their own. This will ease the pressure on the bathroom furniture in your bathroom itself. Moreover, with washstands in your children’s rooms you will decrease the traffic competing for use of the bathroom in the mornings and evenings, as they will be able to wash and brush their teeth elsewhere.

Cover unsightly appliances with matching kitchen doors

June 24, 2010
Posted in Kitchen Design — Written by Becky

Kitchen designers have lots of clever ways of making your kitchen both ultimately practical and effortlessly stylish. Style depends on a number of things, but what you don’t want to happen is for your kitchen essentials to interrupt your interior design.

Continuity

With so many different appliances and units in our kitchens these days, it can be hard to achieve a kind of continuity in terms of design within the room. Refrigerators, cookers, dishwashers, freezers, wine coolers, and so on, are often designed differently to one another and so don’t follow the same design scheme. You can counteract this fact by covering some of these units with kitchen doors.

Kitchen doors that match those that front all of your kitchen cabinets can disguise some of your appliances. Naturally, they can’t hide your cooker, but it is likely that you cooker will be a major design feature in your room in itself, so won’t be something to keep out of sight. Other appliances like wine coolers also look quite attractive on display, but for the sake of continuity, it is a really nice touch to keep your fridge, freezer and dishwasher hidden away.

Taking this approach will ensure that nothing disturbs the design theme you have chosen for your kitchen.
