Not everyone is blessed with a large kitchen. Sometimes space in the kitchen really is at a premium and you have to be really careful in the way you design the room so that it is as convenient and as pleasant as possible. This doesn’t have to be as difficult a task as it might seem.
The most important thing is that you prioritise your kitchen and identify the components that are most essential to the room. There will be obvious appliances will refrigerators, freezers and cookers that you will have to accommodate in the room, as well as dishwashers if you can engineer the space.
You will also need storage. Remember to use the walls of your kitchen for upper kitchen cabinets. These will provide a great deal of storage and won’t in the way of any appliances whatsoever. You can also find clever corner storage solutions to help you make the most of areas that are not always very accessible.
Your kitchen sink is also likely to take up the equivalent of one cabinet or appliance, but you can use the area beneath to accommodate your waste bin and to provide storage for cleaning materials and other products.

Colour is really important when you want to make an impression with your interior design. Bold colours represent the best method of making a room feel alive and vibrant. This is particularly important in rooms that you hope to feel sociable and inviting for members of your household and for visitors and guests.
The kitchen is one such room where colour can play a huge role. Kitchens that are too white and plain often feel a little bit too austere to spend time in. Kitchens that are too dark are a little bit impractical. However, incorporating a little bit of bright colour into the room with your kitchen worktops and kitchen doors can make a real difference.
Red and orange are lively and bright and make for really funky kitchens. Blue and purple are not quite as warm but they exude a really attractive and sophisticated aesthetic that can make your kitchen particularly pleasant to spend time in.
Kitchen doors are probably the best components for introducing colour as they allow you to leave your worktops, walls and floors as they are. Remember not to try and overdo it by introducing too much colour or too many clashing colour schemes.

Modifying the kitchen on a budget is all about singling out certain kitchen features that need the most attention. It is unlikely that all the components of your kitchen need replacing all at once. Many kitchen elements are made to last and so won’t need replacing for years on end – take kitchen worktops, for instance.
However, the purpose of your kitchen renovation may be an aesthetic one. You may simply have tired of the general look of your kitchen and feel that it is in need of a bit of work to adapt it to your changing tastes. This is as good a reason as any to redesign parts of the room.
Identify the parts of the room that you feel make the largest impression on you when you enter it. This is likely to be those that take up the most visible space, i.e. the kitchen doors. All your kitchen doors face you when you enter the room so they are responsible for the aesthetic impact.
Replacing your kitchen doors is a really cost-effective way of transforming your kitchen. Go for a new colour scheme or new finishes to bring your kitchen up to date and make it a room to be proud of.

Kitchen renovations do not have to cost the earth. Lots of people imagine that when they choose to update their kitchen they have to completely transform the room, tearing out existing units and starting again from scratch to create an entirely new room. This simply isn’t the case. By selecting the right kitchen furniture, you can renovate your kitchen cheaply whilst gaining the transformation you are hoping to achieve.
One of the ways you can modify your kitchen is by replacing the kitchen worktops around the room. It is often your worktops that make the room look a little bit tired and in need of some attention. Simply by replacing your old ones with brand new worktops, perhaps of a different shade, you can bring your kitchen right up to date.
Since you will not be changing too much of the rest of the kitchen, you may find that you also have a larger budget available just to spend on worktops. This means you may be able to make the step up from composite worktops to granite worktops or quartz. These materials are long lasting and look absolutely stunning so represent a really attractive and smart investment.

Over the last two articles, we have discussed the benefits of electric showers and power showers. In the last part of our three part article we will discuss the benefits of the increasingly popular thermostatically controlled shower.
Thermostatically controlled showers
Thermostatically controlled bathroom showers are an excellent choice if you have a combination boiler. The shower takes the already heated water from your boiler and cold water from the mains and mixes it using a thermostatically controlled mixer valve. The thermostat in the shower will make sure that if any hot or cold water is drawn elsewhere from the system, the water from the shower head will remain at the same chosen temperature, and will not scald the person having the shower.
A thermostatically controlled bathroom shower is a great cost-effective choice if you have already got a combination boiler, as the only components you will have to buy are the shower itself and the piping between the nearest hot and cold water points and the shower.
All the showers we have covered in this three part article are available in many different styles to complement your bathroom design.

In the last article we discussed the benefits of electric showers. In this article we will discuss power showers and in which situations you can use them.
Power showers
The thing that both power showers and thermostatically controlled showers have in common is they need water to be heated by another source to work. In the case of a power shower, the shower needs to take hot and cold water from respective storage tanks. The PSI rating of power showers means that water cannot be heated as quickly as is needed by your boiler to supply the hot water. And the cold mains supply may also not be at a pressure that is not high enough for a power shower. It is for this sole reason that most people are now getting rid of hot water tanks and opting for combination boilers that power showers are not more common. However if you have a combination boiler, there is nothing to stop you installing a separate hot water storage tank and using this to supply the shower pump.
In the next article we will discuss thermostatically controlled showers.

With most people in the UK preferring a shower instead of a bath choosing the right bathroom shower can be a little tricky. We thought we would give you a three part guide on what the main differences between the different types of showers are, and give you some advice in which situations they can be used.
Electric bathroom showers
Electric showers are the most common type of shower in the UK. Their popularity is most likely down to the fact that they only need a cold water supply and an electrical connection to work. This means that people who are not connected to mains gas, which can be common in rural areas, and people who have no other means of heating the water can enjoy a warm shower.
Electric showers need to be fitted by a Part P registered engineer. There are many types available and are graded by their Kilowatt output. For example, a 10kW shower will be able to heat the cold water from the mains at a faster rate than a 7.2kW so the flow rate will be inherently faster which is great news if you like a powerful shower. The increased energy needed by a 10kW shower will however mean larger sized cabling needing to be used and of course more energy used when you have a shower. The choice in this regard is up to you.
In the next article we will discuss power showers.

The last article dealt with storage considerations when designing a new kitchen space. Although storage is very important, it is not the be all and end all in this particular case. You must also think about work surfaces, practical additional elements and the atmosphere of your kitchen.
Work surfaces
Kitchen worktops are absolutely crucial elements in any kitchen. They represent the work surfaces that you will use for absolutely everything you do in the room, whether it is to do with food preparation, cooking, drinking or cleaning. For this reason, you must choose durable work surfaces.
Practical additional elements
You will obviously have to make plans regarding kitchen sinks and kitchen taps, but you can also incorporate some practical additional kitchen components alongside these. Things like waste disposal units and garbage organisers are good additions.
Kitchen atmosphere
You kitchen has to be nice enough for you to want to spend time in it. This doesn’t just mean selecting stylish kitchen cabinets and worktops. It also means setting the right mood. You can do this via your selections of kitchen lighting and heating. Designer radiators are great for this purpose and you can get underfloor heating and mood lighting as well.

Designing a new kitchen is a big job. It requires a lot of motivation and a great deal of though. In the end, it is always worth putting in the time to plan your new kitchen thoroughly to make sure that the final result is as good as you had hoped. This article and the one which follows it are designed to try and guide you through the main things you should be focussing on when drawing up plans and carrying out a complete modification of your kitchen.
Considering storage
Your new kitchen will have to accommodate all of the things you expect to have to hand in the room. This means planning thoroughly regarding kitchen cabinets and clever storage solutions. Among the things you must plan for are food items, drinks, preservatives, spices, utensils, cookery and cutlery.
If you can, try and lay all of these things out in front of you when you are planning your future storage. This will help you to be able to visualise how much storage you ought to make room for when you get around to drawing blueprints for the kitchen. Remember, it is much more sensible to overestimate in this regard than to cut things too short.

Two of the most important components of your new kitchen are the kitchen worktops and kitchen cabinets you choose to install. The primary use of these kitchen components is practical, but it is important to choose wisely regarding aesthetics as well. Your kitchen is a room that will be seen by all your guests and you will want the room to make as big an impact as possible.
Kitchen worktops
Kitchen worktops need to be hardwearing. These are the surfaces that you will work upon for years on end, so the practical consideration you must make when you look for worktops must be to do with durability. The materials generally used to make these kitchen components are wood and granite, but there are others available. Remember to consider the style factor of any worktops you consider installing in your new, modified kitchen space.
Kitchen cabinets
Primarily, kitchen cabinets are about storage. They provide the ideal solution to storage issues in the kitchen. However, kitchen doors also account for a large visible area of the room which means style has to be a priority. Shop carefully for really stylish cabinets and see the difference they will make to the room.
