Some homeowners find themselves in a position to extend their kitchen as their family grows. They may even move house to accommodate extra family members, recognising the kitchen as one of the spaces that has to adapt to larger numbers. This is purely because more mouths to feed, means more food to prepare. It also means more bodies milling around the room when they have grown up a bit, often with everybody doing their own separate thing.
Unfortunately, upgrading in this fashion isn’t an option for everyone. For that reason, it is important to make the most of the space you have in your existing kitchen and change tack if you feel the room has to adapt with the times.
With bigger families, the more kitchen worktop space you have the better. Try and maximise that space by limiting things that take up too much room. Do you need a bulky microwave, for instance? Can you keep fruit bowls elsewhere? Consider whether you can downgrade your sink to a smaller unit if you already have a dishwasher.
Storage is another major issue. This time it is a question of maximising the space in your kitchen cabinets. Have regular clear-outs and don’t bow to the temptation to keep luxury items that you don’t use often in places that would be better used for foods and crocks that you use every day.
